A colourful Independence Day celebrations by Telangana government inside the historic Golconda fort saw the Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao launching a tirade against “evil forces” for spreading a disinformation campaign about the intensive household survey in the State on Tuesday.

Mr. Rao was accorded a rousing reception when he arrived at the fort. After the customary guard of honour at the entrance, he was driven in his Toyota Prado by horse borne outriders on the bumpy stretch of stones up to the rostrum.

In his 25 minute speech from a makeshift rostrum after unfurling the national flag, Mr. Rao listed out several achievements of his government in the last two months, including the flagship programme of debt waiver to farmers which cost Rs. 18,000 crore to the exchequer.

The household survey was not intended to cause any inconvenience but a sincere effort to extend the benefits of government to the needy. It was being done in the absence of real statistics, Mr. Rao said.

He criticised the indifference of the previous governments to drought and natural calamities in Telangana in the last five years and announced distribution of input subsidy to farmers in all districts from Friday.

Hyderabad :

It is only 67 days since the new state of Telangana has been formed. With every other field in the state rapidly working towards development, an all-women organisation called ‘Association of Lady Entrepreneurs of Telangana State (ALETS)’, was launched on Saturday by a group of successful entrepreneurs in the state to empower women.

Some of the main objectives of the organisation are to educate women to come forward and become entrepreneurs in various fields, improve socio-economic aspects of women in urban and rural areas.

“Women, especially those in rural areas, are very industrious and have a lot of ideas. We will go and give them guidance in business planning, capacity building, marketing awareness through linkages,” said M Sarita Reddy, founder-president of ALETS.

“When we use the word start-up, the first thing that comes to mind is money. However, we feel counselling is more important,” she said. Apart from helping women establish their own start-ups, the association also assists them in conducting various exhibitions to showcase their talents.

Sarita remarked, “We will also establish different incubation centres for women entrepreneurs in the future. Formation of Telangana is a sixty year old dream. Women are the foundation of developing State. Hence, there is a need for a common platform to empower women in the state.”

“While many students are graduating from engineering and other degree colleges these days, it is impossible for all of them to get jobs. Therefore, entrepreneurship is one of the most affordable options for the pass-outs who have great ideas in mind,” she opined.

“It is indeed a matter of pride that Telangana women have taken the initiative in entrepreneurship,” said K Sudhir Reddy, president of Telangana Industrialists Welfare Association.

“There are hardly any women entrepreneurs in the state today. If one has to go with the numbers, the total percentage of women entrepreneurs in the state today is a mere three,” Sudhir Reddy said.

“For a country to develop, women are more important. I believe they have better understanding skills and work towards development of the state,” he added.

Race among Anglo-Indians hots up for nominated post

Decision of the Telangana government to put on hold nomination of Anglo-Indian community member to the Legislative Assembly it had selected has raised the hopes of other aspirants.

The 10,000 strong Anglo-Indian community in the new State expressed surprise when Telangana government backed Royden Roach for the nominated MLA’s post. It is said that the community associations have written to the government objecting to his nomination.

Maureen Hatch, a social activist, Warren Latouche, president of All-India Anglo-Indian Association, Secunderabad-Hyderabad branch and Gerard Charles Carr, Treasurer of Federation of Anglo-Indian Association of India are hopeful of nomination.

Initially, the TRS government had recommended the name of Maureen Hatch, a social activist and former employee of AP Industrial Development Corporation.

However, a ‘small technical error’ in the covering letter and not her bio-data had resulted in the file recommending Ms. Maureen Hatch as the nominated MLA being returned from Governor’s office for ‘relook’.

Ms. Maureen told The Hindu that when she was requested to give a copy of her bio-data to the Telangana Legislature Secretary. The covering letter addressed to Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao was given, but the body of the letter contained YSR Congress party’s name. The error was brought to her notice, correction was made and a fresh letter submitted and accepted. She appealed to the TRS government to consider her candidature.

Wing-commander Peter de Padua, Vice-president of All India Anglo Indian Association Hyderabad-Secunderabad branch said that country head of the association Neil O’Brien and the governing body has recommend the name of Warren Latouche, president of the City branch for the post. “Mr. Latouche has demonstrated in many ways, genuine concern for the members of Anglo Indian community,” he said.

Mr. Carr is also in the race hoping that his association with the TRS and the community service he had done would get him the nomination.

Anglo-Indian Association general secretary Hilary Platel clarified that Elvis Stephenson was not the vice-president of the Association.
