No cash incentive for international hockey player

“Can anyone help me please?” This exasperated appeal from international hockey player Yendala Soundarya might well sum up how the less privileged and those not good at projecting themselves suffer for want of help from the powers-that-be.

The 25-year-old hockey player, silver medallist in the 2009 Senior Asia Cup, is the only international women’s hockey player now from Telangana, hailing from Nizamabad. She also won a silver in the Asian championship, representing India in the Women’s World Cup.

Her fervent appeal came on a day when Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao announced a cash incentive of Rs. 50 lakh for the World women’s junior boxing champion, Nikhat Zareen, also from Nizamabad. Apparently, he was not briefed about this outstanding hockey player!

The failure of Soundarya’s parents, who happen to be daily wage earners, to project their daughter’s achievements, is proving costly.

“Please tell me how I can get some help from the government. It has been a struggle right through and it really hurts that no one is there to take up my cause,” said Soundarya from the national camp in an exclusive chat with The Hindu.

Soundarya, gold medallist in the 2008 Japan international tournament (under-18), is not bothered as to what others got. “I am more concerned about myself. Will I get any incentive at all is the big question,” says the star forward, who is preparing for next month’s Asian Games.

“It makes me wonder as to why I pursued the sport when there is no system in place to get due recognition,” she complains. When contacted, a senior sports authority official, wishing to remain anonymous, said the gaffe was the result of the lack of a clear-cut sports policy especially with regard to cash incentives.

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao announced cash incentives of Rs. 50 lakh each for the gold medallists, Rs. 25 lakh each for silver medallists and Rs. 15 lakh for bronze medallists in the recent Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Badminton coaches Pullela Gopichand and S.M. Arif will also get Rs. 50 lakh each for their contribution to the success story. It was a pleasant surprise for all the CWG medallists when they met the Chief Minister at his chambers in the Secretariat on Wednesday.

Sports City
The Chief Minister also told the delegates that the government would develop an excellent Sports City around Hyderabad shortly. “Design and development of the Sports City should be planned by using the local Telangana talent. The facility will also host national and international events once in two months,” he said.

Mr. Rao accepted a suggestion to allot the existing sports infrastructure to talented sportspersons to develop academies. He promised to give a new direction to sports by ensuring that all deserving players get the desired support on all fronts. “We will take every step to make Hyderabad the final destination for sports,” he said.

CWG gold medallist Parupally Kashyap, silver medallist Jwala Gutta, bronze medallists P.V. Sindhu, R.M.V. Guru Sai Dutt (all from badminton), Gagan Narang (silver & bronze in shooting), gymnast Aruna Reddy (no medal) were among those present along with India’s chief national coach Pullela Gopichand and champion Saina Nehwal.

Later, Gutta Jwala said that the Chief Minister was very positive during his interaction and promised to extend all support to the sports fraternity. She also welcomed the appointment of tennis star Sania Mirza as brand ambassador of Telangana.

“I see nothing wrong in this. I am really proud that a woman sportsperson from Hyderabad has been chosen as one,” she said. Jwala Gutta was also game to meet A.P. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and would not say ‘no’ if offered the brand ambassador role.

It’s a ‘golden’ moment for us, say Kashyap’s parents

Parupalli Kashyap achieved what his coach and mentor Pullela Gopichand could not do – win the men’s singles badminton gold in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Sunday. And, quite predictably, this fantastic achievement proved to be a “huge relief” for his parents, Parupalli Uday Shankar and Subadhra.

Immediately after this feat, Telangana State Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao sent him a congratulatory message. “We hope this Hyderabad-born player will win many more medals in future,” Mr. Rao said in the message.

Kashyap’s parents’ anxiety, especially in the decider of the men’s final when he warded off a spirited challenge from Derek Wong of Singapore, was understandable. “Yes, we were all waiting for this ‘golden’ moment. It is a huge relief that finally Kashyap is the gold medallist in a major event,” exclaimed a beaming Uday in a chat with The Hindu.

“We know how much pain and suffering he had to undergo because of the asthma problem. There was a phase when that threatened his career. But sheer grit, support from everyone and by God’s grace, Kashyap overcame all that and is now a champion player,” pointed out the proud father, who is scheduled to leave for Nigeria for a long assignment as the CEO of a company.

Interestingly, though the 27-year-old champion shuttler did try to speak to his mother after the marathon semi-final on Saturday evening, he could not because she was indisposed. “He was a bit disappointed but I just told him that you should win the gold,” reveals Uday Shankar. What has apparently delighted the proud parents is that now Kashyap is the proud owner of a gold in a major event of this magnitude beating his previous best performances of a bronze (men’s singles) and a silver (mixed team event)in the 2010 CWG and a quarter-final appearance in the 2012 London Olympics.

“Yes, we are all proud of his achievement,” his elated parents commented.

City’s ‘fab four’ for Asian Games

Even the dearth of facilities for beach volleyball here could not deter these players from winning accolades. The ‘Fab Four’, also represent the way some die-hard athletes continue to struggle despite lack of a proper system.

Hyderabad doesn’t have a beach anywhere in the vicinity. But, the makeshift beach volleyball court at Musheerabad Playground continues to produce quality players good enough to represent India at the highest level.

Asian Games in Incheon from September 19 will witness a rare feature of four Hyderabadis – Sara Ravinder Reddy (Postal), Kasi Viswanadha Raju (Income Tax), Tumpera Naresh and M.C.H.R. Krishnam Raju (both from Customs & Central Excise) – representing India in the beach volleyball competitions. While Ravinder and Kasi earned the privilege by virtue of being the national champions, Naresh and Krishnam Raju were the runners-up in the Chennai edition.

The ‘Fab Four’, also represent the way some die-hard athletes continue to struggle despite lack of a proper system.

“It is very difficult to sustain your interest in the sport for you are not sure of what sort of encouragement you get,” says 34-year-old Ravinder, who along with Kasi will be featuring in his second Asian Games.

Significantly, these beach volley ball players have no coach and train on their own; thanks to the efforts of national volleyball referee M.B. Narsimloo, hailing from the locality.

“Our competitors have long-term training and facilities. You can imagine how difficult it will be for us to adjust to the playing conditions in Incheon where you play on the natural beach with strong winds. It demands high levels of endurance, skills and a different kind of preparation altogether,” the four say.

Ravinder and Kasi won the senior national title last week in Chennai as wild card entrants because the Telangana Volleyball Association is yet to get the affiliation from the Volleyball Federation of India.

Once cricketer, Aarti is now her team’s video-analyst

At 31, former Hyderabad cricketer Aarti Nalge is achieving what she could not as a player – be a part of the Mithali Raj-led Indian team for the next month’s England tour. This time, she’s in the team as its video analyst.

“Having played cricket at some level, I am aware of the expectations and especially what the coaches look for at the end of the day’s play. My job is to be ready to give them the video clips backed by complete statistics about a player’s performance any time,” explains this former national cricketer.

Illustrious lineage
Her father is the well-known curator for the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) Datta Nalge. He was earlier at the Gymkhana Grounds and is now taking care of the pitch inside the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium, Uppal.

“My father is a huge source of inspiration and his support always matters to me,” says Aarti, who owes the role switch to BCCI president in-charge N. Shivlal Yadav and General Manager (Operations) M.V. Sridhar.

Sheer passion for the game made her quit well-paying jobs at Genpact and Bank of America. “I love cricket and can’t be away from it,” Aarti says. “I am also grateful to captain Mithali, the support staff and the BCCI for their faith in me,” she adds.

The team will play a Test match and three One-dayers. Aarti’s previous engagements include the recent Sri Lanka One-Day series in Visakhapatnam and the T-20 World Cup in Bangladesh.

K T Rama Rao scores with CEOs

IT minister K.T. Rama Rao with CEOs at the ‘Hyderabad CEO Cycle Ride’

K.T. Rama Rao is making every effort to be seen as a “friendly and accessible” IT minister. On Saturday, he turned up right on time — at 7 am — to flag off the “Hyderabad CEO Cycle Ride” at Madhapur.

Yes, KTR’s punctuality totally scored a point with the 150-plus participants at the event and he topped it off with plenty of jokes. After the event —aimed at promoting the concept of wellness and cycling — the IT minister spoke on the “Future of Hyderabad and the IT industry”, apart from posing for a round of selfies and chit-chatting with the corporate honchos. He kept everyone in splits with his wit, as he picked on the late comers, including the IT secretary.

KTR also shared the Telangana government’s plans to build a cycling track alongside the Outer Ring Road to hold international cycling events and bring in more cultural and lifestyle events to the city. The CEOs also had a grand time catching up with each other.

Murali Bukkapatnam, president of TiE, Hyderabad chapter, said, “It’s a good way of networking and catching up with heads of several companies. And KTR kept the atmosphere even lighter. It was impressive to see a minister come on time and stay till the end.”

Young sailors bring glory to the city

The fact that some boys are from the economically underprivileged section shows that the sport is gradually losing its elite tag. Suheim Sheik, president of the Yacht Club of Hyderabad, has been coaching schoolchildren, some of who come from poor families and these boys seem have taken to the sport like a duck to water.

Although Hyderabad is located far away from the coastline, thanks to the presence of the Hussainsagar lake, the city has produced several talented sailors who have fetched medals for India in international competitions.

The most noteworthy among them are Arjuna awardees – C.S Pradipak and Rajesh Choudhary (originally from Bihar but learnt sailing on the Hussainsagar waters), and A.A. Basith, who represented India at the Munich Olympics.

Fortunately the flow of talent still continues and now there are a bunch of youngsters who are looking to follow in the footsteps of these achievers. The fact that some of the boys are from the economically underprivileged section of society shows that the sport is gradually losing its elite tag.

Suheim Sheik, president of the Yacht Club of Hyderabad, has been coaching schoolchildren, some of who come from poor families and these boys seem have taken to the sport like a duck to water.

Nikhil Kumar, whose mother is in the fish selling business, showed so much promise that he was sent for an advanced level coaching course conducted by Polish coach Marek Nostitz Kackowski in Hong Kong.

Ragi Rajnikanth is another young lad with tremendous potential. He has bagged the bronze in Topper class national championships twice. “Hussainsagar lake is a very good sailing venue in many ways,” says Lt. Col. M.P. Jaggi (retd), a former sailor.

“The lake has the requisite length and breadth to lay a full sized course. Two internationals were conducted here – the Four Square International in 1990 and the Asia Pacific Laser Regatta in 1991. Moreover, it is located in the middle of the city, which means less hassle in the transportation of boats, sailors and maintenance crew. Also, it allows more people to view the events. All these factors give Hyderabad an advantage and we are hopeful that this city will produce more top level sailors,” he says.

Taking a tough stand

Playing with senior players has helped paddler Hari Krishna chalk up victories

V.S. Hari Krishna preferred to punch above his weight right from an early age. Unlike several children who fake their dates of birth to play against younger rivals, he showed a penchant to take on tougher, if not older, opponents.

Such an approach stood him in good stead as the 14-year-old, who should be playing in the junior category, clinched the youth boys (under 21 years) title of the St. Paul’s Stag Table Tennis Academy state ranking tournament recently. All those training sessions at the aforementioned academy with former international G. Jitender and Shreyas Jagirdar, another senior player, had paid off.

Hari attributes his recent success to the 45-day national camp held at Lucknow in summer, where he learnt new techniques from the German coach Peter Angel. “This outing gave me a lot of experience and confidence,” says the youngster.

Setting out in the sport as an eight-year-old, the class X student of Gitanjali Devashray built up an impressive body of achievement. In March, he clinched a bronze double in the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Global Junior Circuit tournament at Panaji, Goa. After claiming the cadet singles bronze, he joined hands with another Hyderabad lad, Snehit Fidel Rohit, to corner the doubles bronze.

“It was a dream come true to wear India colours and play before the home crowd,” the teenager said of the Goa experience. Hari finished fifth in the Table Tennis Federation of India’s (TTFI) 2013 sub-junior boys rankings. In the singles of the said section, he claimed bronze at the National ranking championship at Ajmer in December last year.

With Chinese paddler Zhang Jike for role model, Hari embarked on the table tennis journey under the tutelage of Maduri Venugopal and is currently coached by Ibrahim Khan and P. Nagender Reddy.
