Digital Domain scripts India foray with studio in Hyderabad

Digital Domain, a leading player in the visual effects arena, has made a foray into India with the opening of a studio in Hyderabad.

This is the fifth studio and the tenth location globally for the company, which earlier this year opened facilities in Beijing and Hong Kong. The company, whose visual effects appear in films such as Titanic, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Spider-Man: Homecoming and Beauty and the Beast, is keen on shaping the 42,000 sq.ft. facility in Hyderabad into the role of a mainstay for it.

Pegging the investment on the new facility in the $3-5 million range, chief operating officer Amit Chopra, in an interaction with the media on Monday, said: “India is and will continue to be an integral part of Digital Domain’s global expansion plans.”

“We foresee the region to be a leading consumer of premium content,” he said, even as Sudhir Reddy, head of Digital Studio, India, chipped in saying the company was keen on taking up work for customers in the country as well. To begin with, the Hyderabad studio would rely on international projects — movies, commercials as well as VR/AR work — before the demand for its services, especially from Bollywood, is expected to pick up.

“Combined with the recent projections for smart phone growth and mobile bandwidth expansion in the region, the people of India are primed to demand and expect premium content, and we are ready to deliver on that need,” Global CEO Daniel Seah said in a statement.

Of the 500 people who can be accommodated at the new facility, 205 are already on board. By mid-2018, the headcount would touch 500, added Mr. Reddy. Globally, Digital Domain employed 1,400 people.

The new studio, inaugurated on Sunday by Telangana IT Minister K.T. Rama Rao, is at present involved with four big projects, the details of which the senior executivesrefused to share.

Lo and behold the magnificient murrahs of Telangana

Eemaata, eemaata, yuvarajula sye aata… (What a delight it is, this dance of the princes…) Thus goes the popular song that best encapsulates the essence of Sadar festival aka Telangana’s very own ‘Dunnapothula Panduga’. Its English translation, ‘Buffalo Carnival of Telangana’ doesn’t quite have the same ring somehow. That’s besides the point though. For this festival is a celebration of the buffaloes — the ‘dancing princes’ that the aforementioned lines of the Sadar song extol. And the star attraction of this year’s festivities were the magnificent Murrah quartet — Raja, Dara, Maharaja and Shahenshah — each weighing well over 1,200 kilos!

As their proud handlers rave about the USP of these hulking bulls, your jaw drops in amazement. “The 4-year-old Raja weighs close to 1300 kg and is a 12-time National Livestock Champion. Maharaja, 6, from Chevella is a 6ft 2 inch-tall 1400-kg alpha male who makes for a breathtaking sight. Then there is Dara, son of the 24-time National Livestock Champion, Yuvraj, who’s fathered over 2,00,000 calves. Like his massive father, Dara tips the scales over 1,300 kgs. And the most expensive of them all is four-and-a-half year old Shahenshah who towers at a staggering 7 ft and weighs a whopping 1500 kilos,” say brothers Mahesh Yadav and Madhukar Yadav, organisers of the Sadar festivities which were held in Srinagar Colony on Friday night.

Bred and raised in Hyderabad, Shahenshah is hailed as the pride of Telangana by E Haribabu Yadav, state general secretary, All India Yadav Mahasabha. “Recently a buyer offered `25 crore to buy Shahenshah but his owner Ahmed Alam Khan refused to sell,” says Haribabu, adding, “Shahenshah was bred and groomed with the intention of beating the celebrated super bull Yuvraj of Hissar (Haryana),” says Haribabu who organised the Sadar festivities in Musheerabad on Saturday night.

And it seems like he’s already living up to expectations. Shahenshah recently entered the record books as the ‘World’s Most Expensive Bull’. “Shahenshah is one of the finest specimens of the murrah breed of buffalos that is ethnic to India. Standing 7 ft tall and 15 ft long, this bull is the pride of India,” says Suman Palle, CEO, High Range Book of World Records.

“The price of a bull is determined by the value of it’s semen which is much in demand. Each ejaculation fetches anywhere between `1,00,000 to `1,50,000. Hundreds of doses are prepared from the semen discharged during every ejaculation which is frozen in liquid nitrogen and sold to dairy farmers,” explains Ahmed Aalam Khah.

These bulls lead a charmed life indeed. “We spend about `4,000- `5,000 every day. They are given oil baths three times a day and it has a couple of attendants looking after it all day. Shahenshah drinks 30-40 litres of milk mixed with raw eggs every day. It’s diet consists of 100-150 apples, laddus made of kaju, pista, badam and dates, concentrates, green grass and hay.”

NTPC Ramagundam, KIMS Hospital get awards

Recognising the contribution of several business leaders and entrepreneurs, who made their mark in various sectors from the two Telugu States, the Hyderabad Media House Ltd. running HMTV news channel presented Business Excellence Awards- 2017 here on Saturday.

The awards instituted for the first time this year which would become an annual feature hereafter were given away by Union Ministers M. Venkaiah Naidu and Bandaru Dattatreya.

The event saw two distinguished businessmen – J. Rameshwar Rao, prominent builder and infrastructure developer and G. Ramachandra Naidu of Amararaja Group – being honoured with Lifetime Achievement Award.

A seven-member jury comprising Ramesh Loganathan, professor-IIIT, and representatives from CII, FTAPCCI, HYSEA, CREDAI and IT companies went through hundreds of nominations and chose the best nominees in 14 sectors. They also presented special jury awards.

Mr. Venkaiah Naidu said recognising the achievements of businessmen and industrialists and felicitating them was a noble deed as it would serve as an inspiration to several others. The industrialists and businessmen were wealth creators, but in our country they were often viewed with suspicion.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended a red carpet welcome to investors who run their business with good values. The government had no business to be in business but focus on providing basic amenities and infrastructure to people and the Vajpayee government had laid that foundation, he said.

The Indian economy was the only one that was growing at a healthy rate, thanks to the dynamism of Prime Minister Modi. Though some people criticised demonetisation, it brought money back into banks with an accountability.

Labour Minister Dattatreya said the government wanted to create a conducive atmosphere for growth of industry and labour for employment generation and poverty alleviation.

NTPC Ramagundam, KIMS hospital, got awards in separate categories. Vaman Rao, Chairman of Kapil Group that set up HMTV, and government officials were present.
