GI tag for Warangal dhurries brings hope to weavers

Signature style: Warangal dhurries are known for their geometrically repetitive patterns and zigzag motifs.

Marketing the carpets directly can lead to better profits for the struggling sector in Telangana.

There’s a ripple of excitement and sliver of hope in Warangal’s artisan community as word spreads on the Geographical Indication certificate given on March 28 by the Chennai-based GI Registry for Warangal dhurries.

“We had to do all our business through the handloom society. But now, with the GI tag, we will be able to market our products on our own, leading to better profits,” says Adepu Ramesh of Kothawada in Warangal, a crafts-centred location in the city. Only last year, some of the carpet sellers here began using online platforms to sell their products. The shatranji carpets and jainamaaz prayer mats made in Warangal range in size from the smallest 2 feet by 3 feet to a massive 60 feet by 90 feet, examples of which are seen in some museums.

Bright colours, geometrically repetitive patterns and interlocking zigzag motifs in cotton and jute are the signature styles of the carpets.

One of the newest innovations by the weavers here is an adaptation of tie-dyed ikat techniques and hand-painted or block-printed kalamkari designs for the dhurries to save time and energy.

“We weave a plain carpet and send it to Machilipatnam and Pedana [famous for the kalamkari style] for colouring based on the design given by us,” says Mr. Ramesh.

‘No’ for family trade’

It takes two days labour by two expert craftsmen to create a 6 feet by 9 feet carpet that sells for Rs. 2,000. “If the design is intricate or made-to-order then the cost goes up,” says Adepu Ravi, who uses pit looms to weave the carpets.

“I am expecting better business, especially if export orders pick up with the GI tag. Over the past 25 years, business has fallen drastically. I am doing 20% of the business that I was doing back then. I am insisting that my children focus on education rather than the family trade,” says Mr. Ravi.

Interestingly, for the Great Exhibition of 1851 in London, two carpets woven in silk were sent from Warangal. They held a place of pride among over one lakh exhibits, which included the fabled Koh-i-Noor diamond.

Today, the bright red and yellow carpets are housed in London’s Victoria and Albert Museum.

Dindi project named after R. Vidyasagar Rao

‘He highlighted injustices done to State in irrigation sector’

The Telangana government has decided to name the Dindi Lift Irrigation Scheme after R. Vidyasagar Rao, a well-known personality in the field of irrigation, who died after prolonged illness on April 29 last year.

Dindi project is meant for supplying drinking water and to meet the needs of irrigation in the fluoride and drought affected areas. According to officials, Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao signed the file pertaining to the decision on Saturday. The State government has taken the decision ahead of the first death anniversary of the irrigation engineer.

The Chief Minister has instructed the Irrigation Department to call the Dindi project as R. Vidyasagar Rao Dindi Lift Irrigation Scheme henceforth.

“Vidyasagar Rao highlighted the injustices done to Telangana in the irrigation sector. He communicated to people in simple language about the discrimination of Telangana region in irrigation sector and created awareness among them on complicated issues,” the Chief Minister said in a statement.

Apart from playing a key role in the movement for separate statehood to Telangana, late Vidyasagar Rao had created a wider debate on irrigation issues, the Chief Minister said adding that his life’s ambition was to provide safe drinking water to the fluoride-affected erstwhile Nalgonda district and provide irrigation facility to the arid lands in Telangana.

“We are making rapid strides in the irrigation sector in tune with the dreams of late Vidyasagar Rao and naming Dindi project in his native district after him will be a befitting tribute to the personality,” the Chief Minister said.

The Chief Minister also sanctioned ₹1 crore for the renovation of Arvapalli Laxmi Narasimha Swamy temple in the reorganised Suryapet district as wished by Vidyasagar Rao during his last moments of life, the officials of CMO said.

Marketyard received the e-NAM award from Prime Minister

Irrigation and Marketing Minister T. Harish Rao said the Nizamabad Marketyard ranked number one in the country by extending the best and prompt services to farmers. It received the best e-NAM award from the Prime Minister for its performance, he said here on Tuesday.

After laying the foundation for Karmika Bhavan and opening Sadhimoota (lunch) scheme at agriculture marketyard he told farmers that the TRS government had aimed at providing total assurance to farmers by completing irrigation projects and strengthening the marketing system.

He said e-NAM made the trading system transparent and weighing produce easy. Over 70,000 turmeric bags could be weighed in a single day and be traded nationwide with the help of the system. It was possible with the concerted efforts of all the people, he said adding that no other marketyard had a rest house for women.

“I am very happy to launch the Sadhimoota scheme which provides lunch for just ₹5 to farmers. We need to satiate the hunger of farmers who provide food to all. The district will become green with crops all through the year if the ongoing projects are completed,” he added.

Mr. Harish Rao said that allotment of ₹12,000 crore in the budget for the welfare of farmers was an indication to say that Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao was committed to the cause of their welfare. The ₹5 lakh insurance for every farmer would be a great support to their families. Being jealous of various welfare schemes introduced for farmers and quick completion of irrigation projects the Congress party was trying to stall them, he alleged.

The Minister assured all possible help from the Government to the oustees of Manchippa Reservoir, whose storage capacity is being increased to 3.5 tmcf. He said red jowar was purchased with ₹100 crore and blackgram, redgram and bengalgram was procured spending ₹14 crore.

Member of Parliament K. Kavitha, MLAs B. Ganesh Gupta, B. Govardhan, A. Jeevan Reddy, MLC V.G. Goud, mayor Akula Sujatha, market committee chairperson K. Divya, Collector M. Ram Mohan Rao and joint collector A. Ravinder Reddy were present.
