Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech has filed for global patent of two vaccine candidates – a recombinant vaccine and an inactivated vaccine – for Zika virus.
The company announced that it could make available the inactivated vaccine in two years if the Indian Government fast-tracked the regulatory approvals once the pre-clinical trials proved to be successful.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Krishna Ella, Chairman and Managing Director of the company, said that Bharat Biotech was probably the first in the world to file for global patent for the two promising Zikavac vaccine candidates.
While the recombinant vaccine might take time, the pre-clinical testing of the inactivated vaccine in animals would be completed in five months.
He said that the company had invested over $ 150 million since its inception to build its portfolio of vaccines, which included Rotovac (rotavirus vaccine) and Typbar TCV, typhoid conjugate vaccine. He said that a patent was also filed for Chikungunya vaccine, which would be entering Phase-1 trials shortly.
Bharat Biotech Director R & D Sumathy said that work on Zika vaccine project was started in 2014 and the patent was filed in July 2015. She said that Zika fever was an unmet healthcare need in India and other countries and the potential for Zika virus epidemic was high.
Mr. Krishna Ella said the normal process for a vaccine to get commercialised would take seven years, including the clinical trials.
However, he said that the Zikavac vaccine could be made available if the Indian Government declares national emergency and moves aggressively in regulatory approvals. He said that women would be the prime target group for the vaccine, followed by adults of both the genders since the virus causes Guillain-Barre syndrome in them.

A Bharat Biotech press release said that the WHO just announced a disease linked to the Zika virus in Latin America poses a global public health emergency requiring a united response.
Zika is now present in 23 countries. Brazil, the hardest-hit country, has reported around 3,500 cases of the devastating birth defect called microcephaly. The Zika virus is spread by mosquitoes of the Aedes genus, which can breed in a pool of water as small as a bottle cap and usually bite during the day.

Having roped in 130 companies and 40 top mentors from the Tech world, T-hub now has students in state governments from Karnataka, Delhi, Uttarakhand, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Orissa and Assam.
These state governments have visited Hyderabad over the last one month to study the largest start up ecosystem of the country, aiming at catching up on the innovation scene and has asked the IT department to help replicate the model. Apart from the ecosystem, even the green building have been studied by these states. Representatives from four more states will visit the hub soon, officials said.
Despite a beeline of states wanting to replicate the largest incubator, T-hub is expected to remain on the top of the incubation scene, as it will reap the benefit of beginning early in the race, as per insiders. “Apart from states, Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) from Bhubaneshwar, Delhi and Bangalore have visited the incubator to study the set-up,” said K Srinivas, CEO T-hub.
The T-hub, meanwhile, is signing up more accelerators in the near future. Under the launch pad, seeding funding, mentorship, incubation space, industry hand-holding, partners and investors have been brought under one platform for better access for start-ups.
A previous T-hub concept was planned by Kerala few years back, but it did not translate into success due to lack of good mentors. The project did not take off, despite being the first state to recognize the power of innovations and start-ups in case of Kerala.
“There is so much of hunger in the innovation community for this kind of an initiative that within five days of launching T-hub, the entire 70,000 sft space was full. Start-ups and innovations are going to be the biggest growth drivers in future and the national government is now waking up to the power of start-ups. Having started early and having created T-hub as the largest and organized ecosystem, we are bound to remain on the top,” said Jayesh Ranjan, Secretary IT, Telangana.

Microsoft Corporation CEO Satya Nadella will unveil four new policies of the government of Telangana, IT minister KT Rama Rao has said.
Speaking at the inauguration of an animation and gaming incubator of Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) here on Saturday, Rama Rao said, “What is more important than creating infrastructure is framing of policies. We have invited Satya Nadella to T-Hub on December 28. On the same day we are going to launch four new policies on Information Technology, Innovation, Image and Electronic System Design Manufacturing (ESDM). Our focus will now be on both software and hardware, and these policies, especially ESDM, will help us compete with countries like Taiwan and South Korea which have done exceptionally well in hardware. We will ask Nadella to unveil our policies and we hope that some other bright gentlemen will also join us on that day.”
Referring to a suggestion made by one of the speakers at the inaugural, Rama Rao said the gaming city would be renamed as Image. “I really liked the name Image. It’s fantastic. It kind of sums up the mood that is there in the state today. It talks about innovation, incubation, incorporation. The young minds that we talk about today are all reflected in that ‘I’ and we are happy that somebody suggested that we go with the name Image. From here on we will call it Image instead of gaming city.”
Speaking about the incubator, Rama Rao said, “I am happy that this campus came up here because right across we are planning to build the T-Hub Phase-II and Image, having everything in the same vicinity will be very helpful to youngsters interested in multimedia, animation, gaming, VFX, etc. This is the right time for them to look at more opportunities in this sector.”

The foundation stone for Image will be laid early next year
Coinciding with Image launch, Hyderabad will host international conference on gaming, animation, visual effects, etc
He advised IT department secretary Jayesh Rajan and others to plan the launch of Image and get it ready by the month of February. “Early next year what we proposed to do is to have an international conference on gaming, animation, visual effects, etc. Let us bring in the best of the world to this place and I request Ranjan to complete all the formalities so that Image will be ready for launch and we can lay the foundation stone. Coinciding with that we can have a conference with all these bright minds,” the minister said.
“The intent of the government is very clear: under the guidance of our Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao we have in the last 18 months ascertained the position as one of the premier destinations for IT in the country. But we are not completely content with that.”
“In fact, there are multiple initiatives which are currently in progress and with the kind of planning we will reach greater heights,” Rama Rao said.
Terming Hyderabad as the safest place in the country, KTR said, “We feel sorry for what is happening in Chennai. No other city is as safe as Hyderabad is and no other city is shielded from these natural forces. I think Hyderabad has this unique opportunity. We have to seize this and make sure that we become premier destination for IT and other fields.”

Sindhu produced a dominating game to notch up a 21-9 21-23 21-14 win against sixth seed Mitani in a women’s singles match.
Two-time defending champion P. V. Sindhu completed a hat-trick of women’s singles title at the $ 120,000 Macau Open Grand Prix Gold after defeating Japan’s Minatsu Mitani in the finals here today.
Sindhu produced a dominating game to notch up a 21-9 21-23 21-14 win against sixth seed Mitani in a women’s singles match that lasted an hour and six minutes here.
World No. 12 Indian dished out some superb strokes and acute angled returns to bamboozle the Japanese, besides making some sound judgements at the baseline to get across Mitani, who struggled to keep the shuttle inside the court. Sindhu dominated the proceedings right from the start as she rode on the errors of Mitani to reach 11-5 at the break.
Mitani came up with an aggressive rally and sealed it with a down the line smash but she failed to curb her errors and most of her returns went wide and long to allow Sindhu lead 17-6 in a jiffy.
Sindhu, on the other hand, was mostly accurate with her smashes and drops as she lead 19—9. The Indian came up with some acute angled returns to trouble Mitani and reached the game point with a smash. The Japanese then went wide to hand over the first game to Sindhu.
After the change of sides, Sindhu once again started on a confident note but she also began missing the lines and Mitani lead 4—2. The Indian checked her unforced errors and came up with stunning smashes to wrest the lead and move to 7—4.
Sindhu made a few wrong judgements at the baseline and also found the net to allow Mitani to surge ahead. At 10—9, Mitani produced her first winner —— a cross court smash —— which left a stretched Sindhu stranded to go into the break with two—point lead.
Mitani started off with a service fault but the Japanese came up with accurate placements which caught Sindhu off guard. But the Indian kept breathing down her neck and clawed back at 16—16.
The duo moved neck—and—neck till 19—19 when Sindhu made an important line judgement to move to match point. But she sent the shuttle long next. A delicate net point once again gave Sindhu a 21—20 match point but Mitani saved again. Sindhu next hit long to give the game point to Mitani, who grabbed the opportunity after the Indian netted following a long engrossing rally.

State Archaeology and Museums all set to put new life into most neglected heritage monument of the 17th century Armenian Cemetery situated at Uppuguda (Opiguda) in Hyderabad’old city will likely to opened for the general public and tourists. Photo: Mohammed Yousuf
The existence of the cemetery of Armenians was brought to light by Mohammed Ziauddin Ahmed Shakeb, a historian from the city in 1970.
Two of Hyderabad’s most famous Armenians, Albert Abid and Alexander Jacob, are not buried at the Armenian cemetery in Uppuguda. But the cemetery is preparing to enlighten people on the role of the two Armenians in the 16 and 17 century. After lying in a state of neglect for decades, the Armenian cemetery, will be opened to public shortly.
The Department of Archaeology and Museums, which is the custodian of the cemetery, renovated the premises some months ago.
“ A caretaker will be posted at the cemetery to look after its maintenance,” said Sunita M. Bhagwath, Director, Archaeology and Museums Department.
Armenians came to India between 16th and 17th centuries as traders travelling through Persia, Afghanistan and Tibet. “A large number of Armenians settled in Hyderabad during the 17th century. Though there are no written records of their activities, traditions and social conditions , the Armenian epitaphs acknowledge their presence,” M.A. Qayyum, former Deputy Director Archaeology and Museums said.
There are about 20 graves in the cemetery, 19 are of Armenians and one is of a Dutch trader.
The graves of two priests Rev Johannes, who died in 1680, and Rev. Margar, who died in 1724, are also here. A single dome on the premises representing the Qutb Shahi style of architecture and two mandapa-like structures, one square and the other octagonal, are distinct features of the cemetery.
The existence of the cemetery of Armenians was brought to light by Mohammed Ziauddin Ahmed Shakeb, a historian from the city in 1970.
“Dr. Shakeb chanced upon a letter written by British Resident W. Haig in Hyderabad to a government official in 1907 about the Armenian cemetery. Soon, officials were informed about it and the place was identified,” Qayyum explained.
Rs. 25 lakh for renovation
The department spent around Rs. 25 lakh for renovating the place. Wild shrubs were cleared and the height of the compound wall has been increased. The authorities took care to see that the wall was renovated using granite, lime and mortar to keep in tune with the character of the precinct.
The tough task ahead for them is to see that the basalt stones with Armenian engravings on the graves are restored. “We will be seeking the help of experts for the job,” Ms. Bhagwath said. Historians suggest that the government seek the Armenian authorities’ help in establishing the identity of all those who are buried here.

Conduct auto-transplantation of liver successfully to save life of a 24-year-old security guard
It was a desperate last ditch attempt by surgeons of State-run Osmania General Hosptial (OGH) here in Hyderabad that saved the life of a 24-year-old security guard, Naga Raju from Khammam. The surgeons extracted his liver, preserved it for hours, removed his blocked and underdeveloped hepatic blood vessels and then reconstructed them with artificial grafts and transplanted the same liver back into his body.
Post surgery, the doctors and parents of Naga Raju kept fingers crossed! As fate would have it, after a fortnight, Naga Raju made a near perfect recovery.
“We lost all hope because private hospitals here had given up on my son. In fact, the doctors at OGH also made it clear that the surgery was risky because such a procedure was unheard of and never attempted before,” recalls Alivellu, the mother of Naga Raju.
On their part, the Government doctors at OGH have maintained that other than one instance in Canada, they have not come across many instances of this procedure, which is technically known as Auto-Transplantation of Liver.
“The youngster had Budd-Chiari Syndrome (BCS), which is blockage of veins that carry blood from the liver. He had to undergo liver transplantation and was in the waiting list. But it was taking time to get a donor liver and his condition was worsening by the day. Removing his liver, reconstructing the blood vessels was the last option,” says Head, Surgical Gastroenterology, Dr. Ch. Madhusudhan.
According to doctors, the prevalence of BCS is one among one million individuals. In addition to blocked blood vessels of the liver, the Inferior Vena Cava (IVC), the large vein that carries blood from lower part of the body to the heart, was also blocked. This caused complete occlusion of hepatic veins that drain the liver.
“The very fact that he has survived for 23 years itself is a miracle. His body had adjusted and over a period of time,” says Superintendent, OGH, Dr. C. G. Rahuram.
