Hyderabad-based firm may set up Chinese truck assembly plant by 2016. It will require 20 acres for setting up the plant/assembly line.

Chinese truck maker Sinotruk has joined hands with Hyderabad firm Overland Trucking Pvt. Ltd. for its India foray, a journey that also envisages setting up of an assembly plant next year.

Though the details, including the different trucks to be assembled are yet to be worked out, Overland Trucking is weighing options primarily between Telangana and Maharashtra for the plant. It is also looking at Tamil Nadu for the facility that is expected to entail an investment of Rs.100 crore to Rs.150 crore.

The final decision will depend on what the governments offer by way of incentives, Overland’s Rajashekar Ailneni said, even while appreciating iPass, a legislation enacted by Telangana to ensure speedy, time-bound clearances for industrial projects.

Mr. Ailneni, who was speaking to presspersons at the launch of Sinotruk’s two trucks for the mining sector on Wednesday, said formal discussions with Telangana Government officials were yet to be initiated, but the plan is to establish the assembly plant by 2016. Twenty acres would be required for the plant.

On the foray, Sinotruk president (Asia-Europe Division) Zhang Houqin said: “Without [presence] in the India market, you cannot be a global player.” Pointing to the huge potential, he said that with more GDP growth and new roads and highways taking shape the demand for the vehicles will only go up. Sinotruk, established in 1960, is a $15 billion firm with a capacity to make 3 lakh trucks, including 40,000 heavy duty trucks.

Mr. Ailneni said that the focus initially was on introducing Sinotruk products to the mining sector in India and followed by cargo trucks. Overland is eyeing sale of 400 units next year.

Hyderabad :

Coinciding with the World Tourism Day, the Telangana State Tourism Development Corporation (TSTDC) entered the online market and launched Android-based mobile phone application and touch-screen kiosks to promote tourism destinations in the state.

The App acts as a virtual guide to users and provides detailed information on the transport, accommodation and history of any chosen place. Any mobile phone user can download this Android-based App free of cost.

The touch-screen kiosks, which will also serve a similar purpose, will be installed at railway stations, bus stations and airports for the benefit of travellers to guide them to the nearest tourist spots.

Information technology minister K T Rama Rao inaugurated the two facilities during World Tourism Day celebrations at Taramati Baradari in the city on Sunday.

Rama Rao advised the TSTDC to explore new trends in tourism promotion such as palace tourism and theme park tourism. “The weekend culture is a developing trend in cities like Hyderabad. It is a good opportunity for the tourism sector to cash in on the growing demand for children’s parks and theme-based restaurants in the city.” He also suggested to TSTDC to develop adventure sports destinations near Hyderabad.

Meanwhile, the TSTDC has announced new initiatives to develop unexplored tourist destinations in the state. Corporation chairman Pervaram Ramulu said that the government was planning to develop theme- based tourism circuits to connect multiple tourist spots under a single package.

An integrated eco-tourism circuit in Mahbubnagar district has been announced recently. A tribal tourism circuit in Warangal district with eight destinations was being developed with an investment of Rs 96.01 crore, he said. On the occasion of the World Tourism Day, the TSTDC presented awards to best performing restaurants, tour operators and guides. ‘One Billion Tourists, One Billion Opportunities’ has been chosen as the theme for Tourism Day celebrations this year. According to a recent report by the United Nations, the global tourism market will have 1.80 billion (100.80 crore) tourists.

To enhance its share in the country’s tourism revenue, the TSTDC is planning to spend Rs 600 crore with a target to develop the tourism spots to global standards.

Tourism secretary B Venkatesham, advisor to the state government KV Ramanachary, TSTDC managing director Christina Z Chongthu and director of archaeology Sunita Bhagawat were also present at the event.

Buddhist Stupa lies in neglect

The Buddhist Stupa dating back to 2nd century BC and one of the 30 walled cities mentioned by Megasthenes located in Dhulikatta village of Eligaid mandal in Karimnagar district lies neglected for several decades due to lethargy on the part of the government.

The Archaeology Department had discovered the heritage structure in 1975 along the shores of a picturesque rivulet on the outskirts of Dhulikatta village. Barring the discovery of this early Buddhist stupa, the authorities have failed to take up any measures for the development and protection of the heritage site for the promotion of tourism.

In spite of several pleas by the historians and others, the authorities failed to provide road facilities to the ancient protected monumental structure. It is barely 33 km distance from the district headquarters, but still reaching the Stupa is a herculean task due to non-availability of road.

Due to non-availability of security at this structure, the miscreants had damaged the ancient monument and stolen away the antique veneer slabs and other panels and bricks. There were also incidents of miscreants digging the structure in search of treasure hunt. Literally, there is not even a sign board educating the people about the importance of ancient structure to attract tourists.

This Buddhist Stupa was constructed on a mound with light weight bricks. It is embellished with sculpted veneer slabs and beautifully carved limestone slabs. It is stated that site had attained importance as it was constructed with 47 slabs to enhance the dome with the Stupa.

Historians say that the Archaeology authorities had discovered other relics such as gateways built with light weight bricks, mahastupa, chatra, residential houses, wells, bangle pieces, ivory combs, gold objects, punch-marked coins, beads, coins of Romans and Satavahanas and seals. Majority of relics were shifted to the present Andhra Pradesh State Museum and only a few antiques lie in the Karimnagar museum.

AD (Archaeology) Premsagar told The Hindu on Tuesday that the Telangana State government was planning to develop Buddhist circuit covering Dhulikatta and other ancient Buddhist structures located in Nalgonda district which will also promote tourism.

A group of architecture students, professors from Bordeaux, France along with students from Hyderabad are collaborating for a week to come up with ideas to develop the two metro rail stations.

The obelisk of Monsieur Raymond at Moosarambagh, the reputed French general in the Nizam’s military, which still evokes awe among the visitors, is set to receive a fresh lease of life from a French connection.

The Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) authorities are now leveraging French artistic and architectural flair to develop Raymond’s tomb into a heritage precinct and also the upcoming Moosarambagh and New Market metro stations.

A group of architecture students, professors from Bordeaux, France along with students from Hyderabad are collaborating for a week to come up with ideas to develop the two metro rails stations as heritage tourism points. The French architectural talent will also provide inputs and conceptualise development of the Raymond’s tomb, around the metro stations.

“The common theme that I have found between Hyderabad and Bordeaux is the passion that people have for their respective cities. They ask us the same tough questions on how to develop the city and at the same time keep its historical flavour alive. It is a stimulating and challenging work and hopefully we should be able to come up with something tangible in a week,” says architect and professor, Ecole D’Architecture De Bordeaux, J. Kent Fitzsimons.

Close to 13 students from France and 47 from architecture colleges in Hyderabad are taking part in this project, being supported by the Architecture and Design Foundation (India), Alliance Francaise and HMR. Based on the innovative ideas coming out of the collaboration, Telangana State Government and HMR will develop these two stations and Raymond’s tomb into a heritage precinct.

“This is a good way to integrate heritage and conservation values of Hyderabad with metro rail routes. This will go a long way in spreading awareness and re-energising public spaces, especially in places that have historical value,” says senior architect P. Venu Gopal, who will be the guide for the students.

‘We badly need a couple of rinks of international standard’

Recognition from the government has come only now, thanks to the Arjuna Award, says Anup Kumar Yama.– File Photo
Recognition from the government has come only now, thanks to the Arjuna Award, says Anup Kumar Yama.– File Photo

For more than two decades, he has been into a sport which was invariably treated with disdain by the powers that be.

The 31-year-old skater’s record speaks for itself – winner of the 2013 World championship gold, two bronze medals in the 2010 Asian Games, the first-ever Indian to win a medal (bronze) in the 2012 World championship in inline artistic category and most recently, the prestigious Arjuna Award (only the second roller-skater ever to get this).

In an interview with V.V. SUBRAHMANYAM , Anup Kumar Yama talks about his passion for roller-skating.

How did it feel to receive the Arjuna Award after having missed out on it last year?

Well, it is a simple case of better late than never. I’m glad that I am in the elite group of outstanding sportspersons who got this prestigious Award.

What does this Award mean to you and to the sport?

Personally, it definitely has an aura and a huge sense of pride too. For the sport, I just hope it gets the desired fillip. Except for one rink at Indira Park, the couple of other rinks are makeshift ones wherein even now, hundreds of youngsters try to hone their skills. We badly need a couple of rinks of international standard in the city to start with.

How difficult is it for a skater to be a champion compared to the more glamorous sports?

Yes, you have to be lucky to have parents like mine (Veeresh Yama and Jaya Yama) who have to constantly keep the morale of the kid high, irrespective of the results. The kid should enjoy the sport, basically. Not think of laurels and the consequences when one is just starting out.

Did you get recognition for all your feats?

If you look at my own career, I have taken part in many Asian and World Championships and won a gold in the latter too. But recognition from the Government has come only now, thanks to this Arjuna Award. Even in terms of financial support, the whole perspective has to change. For instance, I got cash incentives only for the two Asiad bronze medals I won and nothing for all the other achievements. This is sad and you can imagine the plight of the average middle-class athlete.

If you are given the option, what will be the first move to popularise the sport?

It is time we focus on creating an indoor stadium in Secunderabad where none exists right now. This is sad, considering the rich sporting history of this part of the State capital. If you remember, I started skating in the corridors of the then MCH office corridors.

What is next for you?

I sincerely believe that this Arjuna Award should spur me to win gold again for India in the next week’s World Championship. I am targeting the Winter Olympics Ice Figure Skating 2018.
